I recently switched from using Chrome to Firefox, but I couldn't watch Netflix on it because Widevine is not installed. The Add-ons page (about:addons) shows this message: Widevine Content Decryption Module provided by Google Inc. will be installed shortly. I've tried resetting/reinstalling Firefox, clicking on Find updates on the plugin or deactivating & re-activating the plugin, still couldn't get it installed, the message was still there. However, I discovered that somehow Widevine was successfully installed on the computer of my office, so I carefully checked the differences and came up with this solution.
Widevine Plugin Download
- Download the plugin for your OS from https://github.com/mozilla/gecko-dev/blob/fccedb8262e05f19c40582683e64b1043f7b3ed0/toolkit/content/gmp-sources/widevinecdm.json. Open the git page and find the URL of the zip file for your OS there. I myself simply copied the whole folder gmp-widevinecdm from my working computer. In case you can't access github, here's the link to the zip file: Win32bitWin64bit
- Open about:support, find 'Profile Folder', click 'Open Folder'
- Create a folder named 'gmp-widevinecdm', unzip the file and copy the content into a sub folder named '1.4.9.1088' Here's an example of the file path: C:Users<YourUserName>AppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfilesxxxxxx.default-xxxxgmp-widevinecdm1.4.9.1088. This '1.4.9.1088' folder should contain widevinecdm.dll in it.
- Open about:config, right click, select New -> String, add these entries:
media.gmp-widevinecdm.version | 1.4.9.1088 |
---|---|
media.gmp-widevinecdm.abi | x86_64-msvc-x64 (if 32bit, use x86-msvc-x86) |
After doing this, Widevine will be immediately enabled on Firefox.
Hope this helps!
P.S. In China, gvt1.com/google.com is blocked by GFW, so I think it's the reason why this Widevine cannot be installed. If you are in China, you may have to 1) use proxy or 2) find this zipped plugin yourself by searching some forums, some kind folks provided the zip (you are responsible for the risk though).

To use Java within Firefox, manually create a symbolic link from the plug-in file in the release to one of the locations that Firefox expects. To make the plug-in available to all users, you must create the link inside of the Firefox application's directory, in the plug-ins subdirectory. Alternatively, you can create the symbolic link in your home directory, in
~/.mozilla/plug-ins
. In the remainder of this document, the text, Firefox plug-ins directory implies either of these locations.Note:
For Firefox version 21 and later, you must create the symbolic link in your home directory,
~/.mozilla/plugins
. However, creating the symbolic link in the plug-ins subdirectory of the Firefox application's directory is not supported in Firefox version 21 and later.Install Firefox Plugin Manually Windows 7
This release provides the Next-Generation Java plug-in. The plug-in file for Linux is located at
jre–9.minor.security.patch/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
.Note
If you are using the classic plug-in file, which is located at
./plugin/i386/javaplugin-oji.so
, then this file should no longer be used and all symbolic links to it must be removed.See Oracle JDK 9 and JRE 9 Certified Systems Configurations.
